About the Program

Pulitzer Prize winning historian, Edwin Burrows, recounts the over 30,000 Americans who were prisoners of war during the American Revolution.  According to Mr. Burrows, 6,800 American men died in the field of battle and close to 18,000 died in prisons.  The majority of these men were held by the British at their primary military base in New York City.  This event was hosted by the National Archives in Washington, DC.

Edwin BurrowsEdwin Burrows is the co-author of "Gotham: A History of New York City to 1898" that was the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1999. He is currently a history professor at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York and a Distinguished Lecturer for the Organization of American Historians.
