About the Program

Pat Shipman profiles the life of Margaretha Zelle who fled her Dutch upbringing and arrived in Paris in 1903 recast as Mata Hari, dancer and later accused spy.  Throughout World War I Mata Hari became renowned for her performances and of interest to the German Secret Service who employed her to spy on the French.  The author relays that Mata Hari would soon become employed as a spy by the French while maintaining ties with Germany.  Pat Shipman discusses her book at the Penn State University bookstore in University Park, Pennsylvania.
