"Out of Iraq: A Practical Plan for Withdrawal Now"

About the Program

George McGovern and William Polk argued for withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq and described their plan to do it.  The co-authors explained why they felt that Iraq was not a serious threat prior to the invasion and talked about the long-term effects of guerrilla warfare. This event was hosted by the National Arts Club in New York City.

George McGovern died at the age of 90 on October 21, 2012. 

About the Authors

George McGovern

George McGovern served in the House of Representatives from 1957 to 1961 and in the U.S. Senate for eighteen years. Mr. McGovern was the Democratic Party's nominee for president in 1972.  Sen. McGovern served as ambassador to the UN Agencies on Food and Agriculture in Rome under President Clinton.

William Polk

William Polk has taught at Harvard and the University of Chicago. While at the University of Chicago he established the university's Center for Middle Eastern Studies.  Mr. Polk became president of the Adlai Stevenson Institute of International Affairs in 1967 and served as an advisor to McGeorge Bundy during the 1967 Six-Day War.  He is the author of "Understanding Iraq."
