Iris Chang

About the Program

Iris Chang talked about her book, "The Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II," published by Basic Books. The book documents the atrocities visited upon the people of Nanking by the Japanese military during the early years of World War II. Ms. describes Nanking as a laboratory in which Japanese soldiers were taught to slaughter unarmed, unresisting civilians - tactics which were later used throughout Asia. She argues that the Japanese government should pay reparations and apologize for its army's actions.
