About the Program

United States Congressman John Lewis (D-GA) was a guest on Booknotes to talk about his memoir, "Walking with the Wind: A Memoir of the Movement." At the age of twenty-three, Congressman Lewis was a speaker at the March on Washington in August 1963 with Martin Luther King, Jr., organized peaceful protests and sit-ins, and organized the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee's drive to organize voter registration during the Mississippi Freedom Summer. Mr. Lewis served on Atlanta's City Council before being elected to congress in 1986.

John Lewis is a former civil rights activist who spoke at the March on Washington with Martin Luther King, Jr. and was the Chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee from 1963 to 1966.  Elected to the United States Congress in 1986, he is the Democratic representative of Georgia's fifth congressional district.
