About the Program
Karen Armstrong discusses her book, "Islam: A Short History." The book recounts the history of Islam from the flight of Muhammad, an Arab businessman, and his family from Medina in the seventh century to the present. Ms. Armstrong writes about the revelations Muhammad received and how the Qur'an earned its name. She explains antagonisms between Iraqi Muslims and Syrian Muslims, and discusses the consequences of modernization on the Islamic world.
Karen Armstrong
Karen Armstrong's books include "The Battle for God"; "A History of God"; "Jerusalem: One City, Three Faiths"; and "In the Beginning: A New Interpretation of Genesis." Ms. Armstrong's book, "Through the Narrow Gate," is a memoir of her seven years as a nun. Ms. Armstrong teaches at Leo Baeck College for the Study of Judaism. She received the 1999 Muslim Public Affairs Council Media Award.
