About the Program
Robin Wright, author of "In the Name of God: The Khomeini Decade," discusses Iranian society and the rise to power of the Ayatollah Khomeini. The book addresses Iran's transformation from a strategic pro-western monarchy to an isolated theocracy. Ms. Wright suggests that the society is not as closed as it is believed and many of the actions taken by the Ayatollah’s government were designed to divert attention away from internal social and economic problems. This program originally aired on November 2, 1989.

Robin Wright has reported from more than 120 countries as a correspondent for the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post, the Christian Science Monitor and CBS News. She was a fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Stanford University's Hoover Institute, Duke University and Yale University. She received the National Magazine Award for her reporting on Iran for The New Yorker. Robin Wright is also the author of "Sacred Rage: The Wrath of Militant Islam," " The Last Great Revolution: Turmoil and Transformation in Iran" and "Flashpoints: Promise and Peril in a New World."
