Masha Gessen

About the Program

Moscow-based journalist Masha Gessen profiles the feminist punk rock collective, Pussy Riot, whose criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin resulted in the arrest and imprisonment of three of its members in 2012.  The author reports on the political and social landscape that led to the creation of the collective and their many actions leading up to their arrest on February 21, 2012, at the Cathedral of Christ in the Savior in Moscow for "hooliganism."  Masha Gessen speaks with Suzi Weissman, politics professor at Saint Mary's College of California at the Los Angeles Public Library.
