About the Program

Historian Carol Berkin recounts the life of Elizabeth “Betsy” Patterson Bonaparte, one-time wife of Napoleon Bonaparte’s brother, Jerome, and a native of Baltimore, Maryland.  The author reports on the diplomatic fissures that surfaced between the United States and France following Napleon's orders to his brother to dissolve the marriage and Betsy's successful campaign to seek a pension from the French general upon her return to Baltimore.  Carol Berkin speaks at Politics & Prose Bookstore in Washington, D.C.

Carol Berkin is the author of several books, including Revolutionary Mothers: Women in the Struggle for America's Independence.  She is the Presidential Professor of History at Baruch College.
