About the Program
Richard Ben Cramer appeared on Booknotes in 1992 to discuss his book, "What It Takes." In the book, Mr. Cramer profiled the candidates for the 1988 presidential election - George H. W. Bush, Robert Dole, Gary Hart, Richard Gephardt, Joseph Biden, and Michael Dukakis. During the interview, Mr. Cramer described the process he used to write the 1,000+ page book.

Richard Ben Cramer, who passed away on January 7, 2013, at the age of 62, was a reporter for the Baltimore Sun, the Philadelphia Inquirer, Sports Illustrated, Rolling Stone, and Esquire. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1979 for his coverage of the Middle East for the Philadelphia Inquirer. Mr. Cramer's books include "How Israel Lost" and "Joe DiMaggio: A Hero's Life."
