Mary Frances Berry talked to Book TV about the history and accomplishments of the United States Commission on Civil Rights, set up by President Eisenhower in 1957.  Prof. Berry also shared stories about her own experience serving on the commission from 1980 to 2004.  This interview was recorded at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

Mary Frances Berry

Mary Frances Berry is a professor of social thought and a professor of history at the University of Pennsylvania.  She served on the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights from 1980 to 2004.  From 1993 to 2004, Prof. Berry served as chair of the commission.  Prof. Berry's books include "Power in Words" and "Why ERA Failed."
