Kevin Mattson, contemporary history professor at Ohio University, recounts the presidential election of 1952 and Richard Nixon’s “Checkers” speech delivered on national television on September 23, 1952. The speech was given in response to allegations that Nixon misused political donations. The author recounts Nixon’s usage of his family dog, Checkers, to denote his everyman status and save his vice presidential nomination.
