About the Program
Winston Groom recounts General Stephen Watts Kearney's command of 2,000 American soldiers who marched from Fort Leavenworth, Kansas to California in 1846. General Kearney was under orders from President James K. Polk to acquire Mexico's Northern territories, land that would make-up a large portion of America's southwestern states. Mr. Groom examines Kearney's travels, the acquisition of land, and the rapid westward expansion of the United States. Winston Groom speaks at the Georgia Center for the Book in Decatur, Georgia.
