About the Program
Julia Scheeres presents a history of Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple, a church that attracted hundreds to Guyana where 909 members died in a mass suicide and Congressmen Leo Ryan was assassinated on November 18, 1978. Ms. Scheeres recounts Jim Jones' life, including his early progressive politics, his appointment as the chairman of San Francisco's Housing Authority by then Mayor George Mocscone, his psychological issues and drug use, and the final days at Jonestown, the church's compound in Guyana.
