About the Program
From the Virginia Festival of the Book in Charlottesville, Virginia, a panel discussion on the Middle East. The panelists - Chas Freeman ("America's Misadventures in the Middle East), Laila El-Haddad ("Gaza Mom"), and Joshua Foust ("Afghanistan Journal") - talk about their books and current events in the region and take questions from festival attendees. The discussion is moderated by William Quandt, professor of government and foreign affairs at the University of Virginia.
Chas Freeman
Chas Freeman served as U.S. Ambassador to Saudi Arabia from 1990 to 1991 and as Assistant Secretary of Defense from 1993 to 1994. In 2009, he was named Chair of the National Intelligence Council by National Intelligence Director Adm. Dennis Blair, but withdrew his name for consideration before being appointed.

Laila El-Haddad
