Elaine Showalter

About the Program

Elaine Showalter, professor emerita of English at Princeton University, presents an anthology of American women writers from the 17th century to today.  Ms. Showalter explores the obstacles that have faced female authors in contrast to their male counterparts.  She profiles the writing careers of numerous women, including Anne Bradstreet, Edith Wharton, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Gertrude Stein, Zora Neale Hurston, and Sylvia Plath.  Elaine Showalter discusses her book at Politics & Prose Bookstore in Washington, D.C. 

About the Authors

Elaine Showalter

Elaine Showalter is the author of several books, including A Literature of Their Own: British Women Novelists from Bronte to Lessing.  She has been the chair of the Man Booker International Prize jury and has judged the Orange Prize and National Book Awards. Elaine Showalter is a professor emerita of English at Princeton University.
