Presidents

Inventing George Washington: America's Founder, in Myth & Memory

Edward Lengel

About the Program

Edward Lengel, editor in chief of the Papers of George Washington, explores the mythologies created to transform the first American President into a national symbol.  Mr. Lengel explains that following the death of President Washington on December 14, 1799 the Nation missed his leadership and crafted an idealized profile of the President.   The author explores the many depictions of George Washington since his death, both exalting and critical at the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond, Virginia.
