Immigrants and the Right to Stay

Joseph Carens

About the Program

Joseph Carens, political science professor at the University of Toronto, argues that unauthorized immigrants who have lived in the United States for a sustained period of time should be granted the right to remain in the country.  Mr. Carens proposes a statue of limitations on deportation and contends that the constant threat of deportation does more harm than the act of illegally crossing the border.  Joseph Carens presents his arguments in a discussion joined by Carol Swain, political science and law professor at Vanderbilt University and Jennifer Hochschild, government and African American studies professor at Harvard University.  The event is hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
