About the Program

H.W. Brands, history professor at the University of Texas, explores America's economic transformation between the Civil War and the end of the 19th century.  The author recalls the rise of capitalism as the United States morphed from a country of disparate farms and small town businesses to industrial centers led by businessmen the likes of Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, and Cornelius Vanderbilt.  Mr. Brand examines how this era changed America's economic and political landscape.  H.W. Brands discusses his book at the Pritzker Military Library in Chicago.

H.W. Brands is the author of several books, including Andrew Jackson, The Age of Gold and The First American: The Life and Times of Benjamin Franklin that was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Biography.
