About the Program

From September 2000, Diane Ravitch discusses her book "Left Back" on Booknotes with Brian Lamb.  Ms. Ravitch chronicles the debates that have determined education policies over the last century.  She argues that the changing purposes of education has been the main factor undermining success, and that by refocusing learning on the aquisition of knowledge, students and schools will be more successful. 

About the Authors

Diane Ravitch

Diane Ravitch was Assistant Education Secretary durring the first Bush Administration where she was a lead proponent of developing State and Federal Education standards.  She has taught at Columbia University's Teachers College, currently works at New York University and is a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institute.
