John Merriman

About the Program

John Merriman, history professor at Yale University, recounts the detonation of a bomb in a Parisian cafe on February 12, 1894 by French anarchist Emile Henry.   Mr. Merriman examines Henry's ideological arguments for his act of indiscriminate violence and documents the ensuing years of attacks by other anarchists in public locations, which included the assassination of the president of France, Sadi Carnot and U.S. president William McKinley.  This event was hosted by Labyrinth Books in New Haven, Connecticut.
