About the Program

George McGovern, former Democratic Party presidential nominee and U.S. Senator, greeted members of congress and signed books at a private home near the U.S. Capitol building. Many of those attending the party received their start in politics during the 1972 campaign.  Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Massachusetts), Sen Dick Durbin (D-Illinois) and Rep. Jo Ann Emerson (R-Missouri) joined George McGovern in making formal remarks during the event.

George McGovern died in South Dakota on October 21, 2012, at the age of 90.

George McGovern represented South Dakota in the United States Senate from 1963 to 1981 and was the Democratic nominee for president in 1972. His was the author of "Ending Hunger Now : A Challenge to Persons of Faith" and "Terry : My Daughter's Life and Death Struggle with Alcoholism."
