About the Program

Steven Johnson recounts the life of Joseph Priestly (1733 - February 6, 1804), scientist and theologian, who discovered oxygen and played a key role in the founding of the Unitarian Church.   Joseph Priestly was a close friend of Benjamin Franklin's and walked in the same social circles as many of the Founding Fathers who according to the author thought highly of him.  Joseph Priestly conducted an experiment that led to his discovery of the existence of oxygen on August 1, 1774.  This event was hosted by Politics and Prose bookstore in Washington, DC.
