In “The Day of Battle: The War in Sicily and Italy, 1943 to 1944,” Pulitzer Prize winning historian Rick Atkinson recounts the Ally military campaign in Italy during World War II. From the invasion of Sicily in July 1943 to the nearly year-long battle throughout the country, Mr. Atkinson details the constant warfare that resulted in over 300,000 Allied casualties. Rick Atkinson discusses his book with historian and author Patrick O’Donnell, author of numerous books, including “Beyond Valor: World War II’s Rangers and Airborne Veterans Reveal the Heart of Combat.”
Rick Atkinson
Rick Atkinson is the author of several books, including "An Army at Dawn: The War in North Africa, 1942-1943" that was the winner of the 2003 Pulitzer Prize in history. Mr. Atkinson was formerly a writer and senior editor at The Washington Post for over twenty years. "The Day of Battle" is the second book in a planned trilogy on World War II.

Patrick O'Donnell

Patrick O'Donnell is a military historian and the author of numerous books, including "We Were One: Shoulder to Shoulder with the Marines Who Took Fallujah," and "Beyond Valor" the recipient of the William E. Colby Award for Outstanding Military History. He is the founder of Operation Drop Zone, www.thedropzone,org, an oral history website.
