About the Program

With her book, "Soldier: The Life of Colin Powell," author Karen DeYoung of the Washington Post, provides the first full biography of Mr. Powell. The book begins with Powell’s childhood in the Bronx and follows his rise through the military ranks, finally ending with his role as Secretary of State in the Bush administration. While not an authorized biography, Mr. Powell participated in six on the record interviews and also provided Ms. DeYoung with unrestricted access to his personal and professional military papers. Ms. DeYoung discusses the book with the Dean of Faculty for the Virginia Military Institute, Brigadier General Charles "Casey" Brower. General Brower served as an Army Aide to President Ronald Reagan. General Brower serves as a guest interviewer and is not an employee of C-SPAN.
