About the Program

In his book, "Redemption: The Last Battle of the Civil War," author Nicholas Lemann says that after the war ended, a second war over the question of rights went on for years. He describes an armed campaign of racial violence that challenged support for emerging black political power. Mr. Lemann discusses the book with Herman Belz, a professor of history at the University of Maryland. Mr. Belz serves as a guest interviewer and is not an employee of C-SPAN.
