About the Program

In the book, "The People’s Machine: Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Rise of Blockbuster Democracy," author Joe Mathews describes a merger of direct democracy and Hollywood-style politics. He argues that Mr. Schwarzenegger has created a new kind of political machine that has implications beyond California. Mr. Mathews is a reporter for the Los Angeles Times. He covered Governor Schwarzenegger’s campaign. He discusses his book with Rachel Smolkin, managing editor for the American Journalism Review.
