About the Program
Charles Stevenson examines what he considers to be the most difficult job in Washington, DC, the Secretary of Defense. As national security adviser to four U.S. senators, Mr. Stevenson has had the opportunity to observe those who have held Defense Secretary position. Mr. Stevenson reveals that since its creation in 1947, only half of the 21 men who have held the post have served more than 18 months. Others who have held the Secretary of Defense post have resigned either in frustration or disappointment. During the talk, Mr. Stevenson categorizes individuals who have held this post as revolutionaries, firefighters, or team players. James Forrestal was sworn in as the first Secretary of Defense on September 17, 1947.
