About the Program
This week on After Words, James McManus poker columnist for the New York Times, grades the U.S. health care system in "Physical: An American Checkup." He began writing the book after he was assigned by Harper Magazine's editor Lewis Lapham to write an article about taking an executive physical at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. The experience prompted Mr. McManus to explore the health of his generation and the state of health care in America. He also weighs in on the cost of drugs, the gap in medical attention between the country's wealthy and poor, the debate over stem cell research and how the outcome could effect his daughter's struggle with juvenile diabetes. He is interviewed by T.R. Reid, Rocky Mountain Bureau Chief for The Washington Post, who is currently working on a book about health care systems around the world.
