11th Month, 11th Day 11th Hour: Armistice Day, 1918

Joseph Persico

About the Program

Joseph Persico's new book chronicles the final day of World War I when thousands of soldiers on both sides were killed in last-minute battles. "11th Month, 11th Day, 11th Hour: Armistice Day, 1918" shows how some soldiers relaxed, smoked cigarettes and played cards with their comrades while other soldiers followed their commanders orders to fight until the 11am deadline. The author attempts to explain why some of these field commanders led their troops in battle knowing that the impending Armistice would take effect in hours.
