About the Program
Syndicated columnist and freelance writer Tom Philpott was a guest on Booknotes in 2001 to talk about his book, "Glory Denied: The Saga of Jim Thompson, America's Longest-Held Prisoner of War." The book tells the story of Special Forces Captain Floyd "Jim" Thompson who was captured by the Vietcong in 1964 when his plane was shot down in Vietnam during a mission. Capt. Thompson spent nearly nine years in cages and prison cells, exposed to torture, disease, and starvation. He is recognized as the longest-serving prisoner of war in American history. With the use of interviews from family members and other prisoners of war, service records, medical reports, and intelligence briefings Mr. Philpott chronicles the Captain's experiences.
