About the Program

Bing West and Major General Ray Smith (Ret.) discuss their new book "The March Up." The story is a first-hand account of how the 1st Marine Division advanced on Baghdad during operation Iraqi Freedom. The two co-authors travelled with eighteen Marine units who experienced combat over a period just over two weeks. Several slides shown during the presentation depict the action in Baghdad during the war.

About the Authors

West, Bing & Ray Smith

Bing West was the Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs during the Reagan administration. He is also the author of several books. Major General Ray Smith (Ret.) is one of the most decorated Marines since WWII. He is a national expert on infantry and urban warfare, having commanded the Marines in Grenada in 1983 and in Beirut.
