About the Program

From Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, Civil War historian James McPherson recounts the Battle of Gettysburg that began on July 1, 1863.   The author describes where and how each segment of the battle took place, while pointing out specific locations of statues, monuments or markers and explaining their significance. He also recalls Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and three maps that detail the major locations and movements of troops during the combat.

James McPherson is a professor emeritus of history at Princeton University. He is the author of numerous books, including  Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era, which he won the 1989 Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction.
