About the Program

In June of 2000 the late historian John Hope Franklin discussed his book From Slavery to Freedom: A History of African Americans.  The book, then in its eighth edition, was originally published in 1947. The event took place as part of the 16th annual Printers Row Book Fair in Chicago.  2013 marks BookTV's 15th anniversary, which debuted on September 12, 1998.

About the Authors

John Hope Franklin

John Hope Franklin was the author of numerous books, including Reconstruction After the Civil War and Mirror to America.  Mr. Franklin served as president of the American Historical Association and taught at several institutions, including Duke University, Howard University, and the University of Chicago. He died on March 25th, 2009, at age 94.
