Clare Brandt

About the Program

In this Encore Booknotes from 1994, historian Clare Brandt talks about her biography of Benedict Arnold, the Revolutionary War commander who became a spy.  Ms. Brandt’s asserts that Arnold suffered from insecurity caused by the adolescent trauma of having an alcoholic father who went bankrupt. She maintains that this trauma led to a yearning for approval and a hypersensitivity to slights and criticism.
