About the Program
Family, friends, and former colleagues talk about Michael Hastings' life and career and read selections from his work. Participants include: Elise Jordan, Michael Hastings' widow; Ben Smith, editor-in-chief of BuzzFeed; John Avlon, editor-in-chief of The Daily Beast; Eric Bates, executive editor of First Look Media; and Jeremy Scahill, co-founder of First Look Media's "The Intercept." Michael Hastings' posthumously published book, "The Last Magazine," is a satire about the workings of a fictionalized newsweekly. Mr. Hastings died in a car accident on June 18, 2013, at the age of 33.
Michael Hastings (1980-2013)
Michael Hastings was a contributing editor for Rolling Stone magazine and a correspondent for BuzzFeed. He covered the Iraq War for Newsweek. Mr. Hastings' 2010 Rolling Stone profile of General Stanley McChrystal, the commander of NATO and U.S. forces in Afghanistan, led to Gen. McChrystal's resignation. Michael Hastings was the author of "I Lost My Love in Baghdad," "Panic 2012," and "The Operators." He died in a car accident on June 18, 2013, at the age of 33.
