About the Program

The five nominees for this year's Helen Bernstein Book Award for Excellence in Journalism participate in a panel entitled, "Uncovering the Truth: Long-Form Journalism in the Age of Twitter."  The panelists include, Dan Fagin, Toms River: A Story of Science and Salvation; Sheri Fink, Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital; David Finkel, Thank You For Your Service; Fred Kaplan, The Insurgents: David Petraeus and the Plot to Change the American Way of War; and Jonathan Katz, The Big Truck That Went By: How the World Came to Save Haiti and Left Behind a Disaster.  The program is held at the New York Public Library in New York City.
 

About the Authors

Jonathan Katz

Jonathan Katz has covered Haiti for the Associated Press, where he worked as a correspondent and editor for seven years.  He received the J. Anthony Lukas Work-in-Progress Award for The Big Truck That Went By

Dan Fagin

Dan Fagin is a former environmental writer for Newsday, and is currently an associate journalism professor and director of the Science, Health, and Environmental Reporting Program at New York University. Sheri Fink

Sheri Fink is a journalist and physician whose work has appeared in the New York Times, Discover, and Scientific American.  Her ProPublica story on what happened at Memorial Medical Center, The Deadly Choices at Memorial, was awarded the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting.  Dr. Fink is the author of War Hospital: A True Story of Surgery and Survival.  For more, visit: sherifink.net.

Fred Kaplan
