"American Spartan: The Promise, the Mission, and the Betrayal of Special Forces Major Jim Gant"

Ann Scott Tyson

About the Program

Ann Scott Tyson tells the story of Special Forces Major Jim Gant, who, in 2009, gained the support of Gen. David Petraeus to embed special forces soldiers in Afghan villages and to have these forces fight along side Afgan soldiers against Al Qaeda and the Taliban.  This strategy worked so well that Osama bin Laden put a bounty on Major Gant's head.  Later, after Gen. Patraeus left CENTCOM, support for Major Gant and his project fell and he was eventually ostracized by the Army.  Ms. Tyson spoke at Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park, Washington.
