Charles Calomiris analyzed the banking systems in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico, and Brazil going back several decades to find out what makes banking systems unstable.  He concluded that the deciding factor is the level of political interference in the system.  This event was hosted by the Museum of American Finance in New York City.

Charles Calomiris is a professor of financial institutions at Columbia Business School and a professor at Columbia's School of International and Public Affairs. He is the author of "U.S. Bank Deregulation in Historical Perspective."
