About the Program

Robert Gates appears at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia to discuss his memoir, "Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War."  In the book, Mr. Gates, who served as Secretary of Defense under President George W. Bush and President Obama, talks about his management of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and shares stories about his relationship with the White House and Congress.  Mr. Gates will be interviewed by Chris Mondics of the Philadelphia Inquirer.       

About the Authors

Robert Gates

Robert Gates served as Secretary of Defense from 2006-2011 and as director of the CIA from 1991-1993.  He was also president of Texas A&M University from 2002-2006 and is currently chancellor of the College of William and Mary.  Mr. Gates is the author of "From the Shadows: The Ultimate Insider's Story of Five Presidents and How They Won the Cold War."
