John Carlos

John Carlos won the bronze medal in the 200 meters at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City.  During playing of the U.S. national anthem at the awards ceremony, John Carlos and his African-American teammate, Tommie Smith, the gold medal winner, wore black gloves and raised their fists in a black power salute to protest injustices faced by African-Americans at home.  Following his track and field career, Mr. Carlos played professional football.  He is the recipient of the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage and was inducted into the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame in 2003.
