Mr. Perry discusses the accuracy of those dispatches, the level of competition between the reporters and the impact of the telegraph on the free press.

James Perry, author of "A Bohemian Brigade: The Civil War Correspondents- Mostly Rough, Sometimes Ready," received the National Press Club's Fourth Estate Award for lifetime achievement in American journalism in 1997. He is the author of "Arrogant Armies," "Us and Them: How the Press Covered the 1972 Election," The New Politics: The Expanding Technology of Political Manipulation" and "Barry Goldwater: A New Look at a Presidential Candidate." Mr. Perry is Senior Political Writer Emeritus for the Wall Street Journal.
