About the Program

Richard White, American history professor at Stanford University, presents a history of the transcontinental railroads.  The author recounts the creation of the railroads, which changed the way American's lived and opened the country to westward expansion.  Mr. White also explores the sizeable impact the railroads had on the economic and political landscape of the Gilded Age.   Richard White speaks at the Commonwealth Club of California in San Francisco.

Richard White is the author of several books, including The Middle Ground, which was awarded the Parkman Prize for best nonfiction book on an American theme by the Society of American historians.  Mr. White is an American history professor at Stanford University.
