About the Program

Sarah Vowell examines the Americanization of Hawaii that began with the arrival of New England missionaries in 1820.  The author recounts the coup, organized by the missionaries that deposed the last Hawaiian queen, Liliuokalani in 1893 and resulted in the annexation of the islands by the United States in 1898.   Hawai'i was named the 50th state on August 21, 1959.  Sarah Vowell speaks at Bookpeople in Austin, Texas.
