Maurine Beasley, professor emeriti of Journalism at the University of Maryland, recalls Eleanor Roosevelt’s years as First Lady.  The author details Mrs. Roosevelt’s ideological background, her engagement in politics, and her transformation of the position of First Lady, from one that was largely unacknowledged to prominent political actor.  Maurine Beasley speaks at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Building in Washington, D.C.

Maurine Beasley is the author of First Ladies and the Press and co-editor of the Eleanor Roosevelt Encyclopedia.  She is a former education editor for the Kansas City Star and staff writer for The Washington Post.  Ms. Besley is a professor emerita of journalism at the University of Maryland.
