About the Program
The late Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV) was the longest serving member of Congress in the history of the United States. He was first elected to the Senate in 1958 and held that office until he died on June 28, 2010.
This Booknotes program was taped in 1989. His book, "The Senate, 1789-1989," is a compilation of weekly speeches Senator Byrd gave from the Senate floor on the history of the institution.
