About the Program
Donald Pease, English professor at Dartmouth University, recounts the life of Theodor Geisel aka Dr. Seuss. The author details Geisel's childhood in Springfield, Massachusetts, the son of a German-immigrant family, to his development of the Dr. Seuss persona at Dartmouth University's student newspaper the Jack-O-Lantern. Mr. Pease documents Theodor Geisel's early career in advertising, his political and social satirical cartoons and his later success as a children's author. Donald Pease is an English, Comparative Literature, and African-American Literature professor at Dartmouth College as well as the Chair of the Dartmouth Liberal Studies Program. Mr. Pease was awarded the Ted And Helen Geisel Chair in the Humanities at Dartmouth College in 1990. He is the author or editor of several books, including The New American Exceptionalism.
