Former Senator George McGovern (D-SD) recounts the life of President Abraham Lincoln.  He details the former president's political career and focuses on Lincoln's legislative decisions throughout the course of the Civil War.  George McGovern is introduced by author and critic Gore Vidal at the Richard Nixon Library in Yorba Linda, California.

About the Authors

George McGovern

George McGovern was U.S. Senator from South Dakota from 1963 to 1981 and the Democratic candidate for president in 1972. He was appointed  the first United Nations global ambassador on hunger in 2001.  Sen. McGovern is the author of numerous books, including Third Freedom: Ending Hunger in Our Time.

Gore Vidal

Gore Vidal is the author of more than twenty books, including "Lincoln," "Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace," and "Palimpsest: A Memoir." He has also written five plays, numerous screenplays, and two hundred essays. He won the 1993 National Book Award for "United States: Essays, 1952 - 1992."
