About the Program

Gerald Martin, modern language professor emeritus at the University of Pittsburgh, recounts the life of Nobel Prize laureate and social and political activist Gabriel Garcia Marquez, who passed away on April 17, 2014.  Mr. Martin examines the literary career of the author of "One Hundred Years of Solitude" and "Love in the Time of Cholera" whose cannon of work created a new literary genre entitled magic realism.  This event was hosted by the Mechanics' Institute in San Francisco.

Gerald MartinGerald Martin is the author of several books, including "Journeys Through the Labyrinth: Latin American Fiction in the Twentieth Century." Mr. Martin is professor emeritus of modern languages at the University of Pittsburgh and senior research professor in Caribbean Studies at London Metropolitan University.
