About the Program

The author was interviewed at the annual Organization of American Historians meeting in Seattle. The author argues that local people in what he calls "the buckle of the black belt" were instrumental in obtaining voting rights and civil rights reform in the 1960's.  He also discusses the role of the SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) and black power leader Stokely Carmichael.
